About the film
"Losing Grip" is a short animated film that explores themes of greed and consequence, through humour set in a colourful environment. The mature undertones create a story that can be enjoyed and interpreted by a wide audience.

The film was a final year project for QUT animation students. With the entire film completed by students, from initial story pitched by Thalia Brunner in March 2018, to rendering and delivery of the film in early December 2018.

All skills were sourced within the small animation cohort and from other disciplines within the creative industry faculty. Completing such an ambitious film within the small time frame was a great achievement and a testament to the knowledge and skills gained.

The film was animated in the traditional 3D software Maya, however was rendered in Epic's Unreal Engine. Unreal Engine is a real-time rendering software that allows for real time adjustments to be easily explored, such as lighting and cameras. Any 3D software user will be aware of the pressure rendering can have on tight deadlines and the dread when issues are only discovered after hours of rendering. Therefore, by using real-time rendering, render times were significantly reduced meaning the pipeline could be pushed further, which allowed for animation and lighting polish.
